Sleeping under the stars

I’m content.

Four and a half hours away from Las Vegas, in the heart of the Utah desert, where the stone slot canyons glow red at sunset, I’m finding inspiration. I’m out of my comfort zone, away from my known world. My cell phone doesn’t get a good signal and the wifi isn’t working. I’m a foreigner here in an unearthly landscape of glowing space rocks, desert cacti, lizards, and sandstone formations. The tiny flies and bigger bugs that swarm the candlelight at night are the only things that remind me I’m not alone. It’s quiet here. I have time to think.

About the badge

In a small town in Northern California called Yountville, above the door leaving the one of the world’s most celebrated kitchens, is a ceramic tile with the word “Finesse” accompanied by its definition. I know this because each year I have a thank you lunch for the students in my lab. They get to select the restaurant and we usually end up at the French Laundry (always ask for a tour of the kitchen, it is amazing). Mr. Keller signs his books with the inscription, “It’s all about the finesse“. That has been my mantra as organizing chairman of Medicine 2.o @ Stanford. This was an artisan conference, handcrafted with love.  So, I’m going to tell you the story about how we made the Medicine 2.0 @ Stanford conference badges.

What is Medicine X?

Medicine X is a catalyst for new ideas about the future of medicine and health care. The Medicine X initiative is designed to is to explore the potential of social media and information technology to advance the practice of medicine, improve health, and empower patients to be active participants in their own care. The “X” is meant to evoke a move beyond numbers and trends—it represents the infinite possibilities for current and future information technologies to improve health. Under the direction of Dr. Larry Chu, Assistant Professor of Anesthesia, Medicine X is a project of the Stanford AIM Lab.
