Description

Josh Mandel, MD creates software and standards that enable app developers to tap into health data and Claudia Williams leads health information exchange efforts for the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC). Josh and Claudia will conduct a 90-minute Master Class on Blue Button for developers. The final curriculum will be shaped by the learners themselves through their course applications, but tentatively includes:

  • How meaningful use, HIPAA changes and Blue Button commitments by private and public health care leaders are fostering data liberation and an innovation ecosystem for patients and developers
  • Data formats and vocabularies that electronic health records use for patient data export, including Consolidated CDA and RxNorm
  • Three ways patients can access their health data and feed it into apps (Download, Direct and REST API)
  • A tutorial showing how to integrate Blue Button data into a patient-facing app

Josh Mandel is a physician and software developer working to fuel an ecosystem of health apps with access to clinical data. After earning an S.B. in computer science and electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an M.D. from the Tufts University School of Medicine, he joined the faculty of the Boston Children's Hospital Informatics Program and Harvard Medical School, where he serves as lead architect for SMART Platforms (http://smartplatforms.org). Josh also serves as the community lead for the national Blue Button REST API. He has a special interest in tools and interfaces that support software developers who are new to the health domain.

Claudia Williams leads ONC’s efforts to rapidly advance health information exchange to improve health care, including giving patients the ability to access, aggregate and share their own electronic health information. In the past year she has served as chief health innovation advisor to US Chief Technology Officer, Todd Park. Prior to joining ONC, Claudia was Director of Health Policy and Public Affairs at the Markle Foundation, where she helped manage and direct Markle’s “think and do tank” Connecting for Health. She holds an MS in Health Policy and Management from the Harvard School of Public Health and a BA from Duke University. Claudia was a Peace Corps volunteer in Botswana, where she met her husband Dave.
