Description

Post-graduate education of doctors – one of the most complex and urgent problems in Russia, where 650 000 practicing physicians can expect only a few thousand vacant government-sponsored scholarships in medical schools.

In October 2013, as part of their long partnership, international pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson, and Russia's largest professional network for physicians DoctorAtWork.com launched a free training course for Russian ophthalmologists.

Particular attention was paid to the fact that internet is a new and not very comfortable thing for the majority of Russian doctors as they have difficulty to read long scientific texts from the screens of outdated laptops in public hospitals.

For this reason, an interactive game, "doctor examines a patient in his office" was chosen as the best way to conduct this training course.

The subject of the course was the definition and use of the OSDI index together with the Schirmer’s test in the diagnosis of the dry eye syndrome.

During a simple, fun game, ophthalmologists studied how the OSDI index could reliably and securely determine the severity of the dry eye syndrome (normal, mild, moderate, severe) and the impact of this syndrome on the visual function.

Game engine was an analogue of the quest, where several patients with different symptoms and anamnesis talked with the doctor. Relevant questions and correct diagnosis gave participants points that they could use later to purchase medical books.

Every tenth ophthalmologist of DoctorAtWork.com successfully went through the game and completed the training course. Game results were so impressive that Johnson & Johnson decided to extend this practice to other specialties. Also, this game will be released in the form of a mobile application for physicians.

DoctorAtWork.com today includes more than a quarter of Russia’s doctors. Our experience suggests that education of physicians through interactive game mechanics is one of the most effective forms of postgraduate training.

During the speech the authors plan to touch gaming scheme of the training course in more detail, demonstrate concrete indicators of involvement of physicians, touch others launched training courses and provide examples of the professional growth of selected doctors.
