Jim O'Connell, as a veteran of the healthcare sector, has 15+ years of operational, financial and entrepreneurial experience in the life sciences. Jim Joined Safeguard in 2007, and is responsible for deploying capital in medtech and healthtech, which includes diagnostics, healthcare IT, devices and technology enabled services. Prior to Safeguard, Jim was in the Corporate Ventures/Business Development group of Becton Dickinson, a F500 medical technology firm. He held commercial roles in sales, marketing and business development at Chemdex, and started in R&D at Biosite, both startups that achieved billion dollar exits. Jim received a B.S. in biochemistry from Virginia Tech and currently serves on the board of the Alumni Association. Jim also received an M.B.A. from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where he led the University of Pennsylvania’s $70K Business Plan Competition.
