Description

The adoption rate of technological innovation has exponentially accelerated with the time span between invention and commoditization shrinking from decades to years. Considering the rise of cheap storage and computing power, enterprises are now experiencing similar speed gains to that of smartphones and their related burgeoning app stores. Health care, however, has been the exception. The health care industry can increase the pace of innovation to match the pace of other industries and decrease compliance burdens by leveraging cloud computing. For both startups and enterprise innovation teams, time-to-market can be reduced from months or years down to weeks in most cases. Likewise, a reduction in costs and an increase in efficiencies will be experienced without the need of specialized team members to oversee those compliance requirements. The combined result is a levering up on patient care quality while simultaneously levering down on health care costs.

Catalyze offers a HIPAA-compliant platform upon which digital health software applications can be more quickly deployed. As a collection of rules (or “controls”) HIPAA is no more than suggestions of security best practices. Catalyze has mapped these controls to a technical implementation strategy (e.g. encryption, disaster recovery) then built a platform to manage those strategies for its customers. Instead of investing time and personnel to build complicated compliance infrastructure, customers can instead focus on their core competency—building their product.

Two client examples prove out the advantages of working with a cloud-based HIPAA-compliant platform to increase speed of innovation and decrease development costs. In 2014, a Veteran’s Administration development team came up with a healthcare technology to increase access to care. However, putting the compliant infrastructure in place to establish that technology would take months, if not years. Instead, the VA worked with Catalyze to quickly deploy their solution, thus decreasing the time-to-market. San Francisco-based startup HealthLoop provides the second example. Instead of putting together a dev ops department to address all the compliant issues around its technology, HealthLoop’s SVP of Technology used Catalyze to offload its compliance burden and thus has saved $132,000 in engineering personnel costs per year.

Travis Good, M.D., MBA, MS, CEO and Co-Founder of Catalyze, Inc. is an expert in healthcare technology, specifically HIPAA compliance and security issues involved with healthcare innovation. In addition to his work as CEO of Catalyze, which offers compliant cloud-based software, Dr. Good is also editor for industry blog HISTalkConnect.
