Improving hospitalized children's lives through music, movement, and dance.

Abstract

The Problem: Childhood hospitalizations can be very traumatic, often causing PTSD in children and their parents. The focus of a child’s hospitalization is often on their physical health, while their emotional and psychosocial health is forgotten.
The Idea/Solution: Research shows that trauma is stored in our bodies. As Post Traumatic Stress expert Bessel van der Kolk, MD says, “Your issues are in your tissues.” Our program uses music, movement, dance, and mindfulness to help reduce the negative impact of hospital stays on children's health, self-esteem, and emotional well-being. Dancin Power creates an outlet for hospitalized children and their families to express their emotions, gives a sense of self, provides normalcy, and helps them feel uplifted.
In this talk, Vania Deonizio, founder of Dancin Power, will share moving stories of how her work has positively transformed young patients’ lives through dance. Dancin Power is a nonprofit organization that developed the first of its kind adaptable and specially designed IN-hospital dance teaching program. After hearing her powerful stories, she will invite you to reflect on how providing expressive arts, music, and movement to hospitalized children can profoundly improve their quality of life.
