ABOUT STANFORD MEDICINE X | WITHINGS PRECISION RESEARCH CHALLENGE
Smartphones and the Internet of Things are changing how patients take care of themselves, how they interact with professionals, but also how research is conducted. Stanford Medicine X and Withings are pleased to announce a joint initiative designed to spark scholarly research activity on chronic diseases that can be managed using Withings devices. The Stanford Medicine X | Withings Precision Research Challenge asks all health care stakeholders to form partnerships and launch one of the following studies:
- A retrospective study using Withings’ database;
- or a prospective study using a Withings devices.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?:
We invite students, caregivers, patients, providers, researchers, technologists, informaticians, and all health care stakeholders to submit proposals, and form partnerships with each other to answer a research question.
If you’re a patient, why not help researchers complete their project. If you’re a researcher, why not help a patient answer a research question. Submit your details below, and we’ll match you with collaborators!
WHAT ARE THE PRIZES?:
- Scientific mentorship through our Stanford faculty and programs
- Mentorship through Medicine X Scientific Advisory Panel
- Patient/caregiver Everyone Included™ study co-design and co-implementation mentorship
- Winner of the challenge will receive mentorship from Withings medical research team and Withings devices for the study (total value: 100,000 USD)
WHERE WILL I PRESENT MY WORK?:
If you are selected as a winner you will present your results or preliminary results at Stanford Medicine X 2017.
WHY SHOULD I PARTICIPATE?
If you’re a researcher seeking to use patient-generated data in your study of chronic diseases, or a patient seeking to understand how your community might engage and seek health care information, or an educator looking to uncover how students and faculty are teaching and learning from each other in innovative and effective ways. Anyone interested in patient-generated data and health care may benefit from participating in this challenge.
WHAT IS THE TIMELINE?:
Proposal submissions begin mid- September and close on Tuesday, November 15, 2016. Six teams will be matched and their proposals will go on to the final stage of the challenge, this will be announced January 31, 2017. These semi-finalists will then complete their research projects using Withings research platform and devices.
HOW DO I PARTICIPATE?:
To begin the challenge, develop a research proposal that includes a research question (hypothesis), research plan you propose to answer that question, and the patient community (or communities) you wish to research. Or you can indicate your interest and be matched with researchers seeking to answer the same questions.
