Lanie Francis

About Me

Dr. Lanie Francis is a medical oncologist and hematologist practicing at the Hillman Cancer Center, the flagship of UPMC CancerCenter in Pittsburgh, PA. She sees patients with a broad array of tumors including, but not limited to, breast cancer, GI cancer, and brain tumors, as well as hematologic issues including leukemia, lymphoma, blood clots and anemia.

She is founder and director of The Wellness and Integrative Oncology Program at UPMC CancerCenter; an approach to cancer patients that addresses the body, mind and spirit within the context of conventional cancer care. Under her leadership, this innovative cancer medicine subspecialty has developed into a core element of patient centered and value based care at UPMC CancerCenter. Utilizing movement, touch, nutrition and mindfulness, Dr. Francis creates a care plan to address symptoms and quality of life in the context of conventional cancer medicine. All care plans are symptom guided and evidence based.

Dr. Francis serves as Associate Medical Director, Medical Oncology, UPMC International, advising on medical oncology in a variety of international venues and contexts including Italy, Ireland, Colombia, Russia and Kazakhstan. Dr. Francis is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine and Research Instructor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She has served as Principal Investigator (PI) for a supportive care clinical trial and is sub-PI on more than 10 clinical trials in cancer medicine.

Dr. Francis received her undergraduate degree from Brown University and her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She completed her internship and residency in internal medicine from the

George Washington University and her fellowship in Hematology/Oncology from UPMC.

Dr. Francis is the winner of the 2015 Leo Criep MD award for patient care and the Ladies Hospital Aid 2014 Innovation Award. She has appeared on national TV on Lifetime’s the Balancing Act and authored multiple articles in the lay press and peer-reviewed journals. She lives in Pittsburgh with her husband, Dr. Elie Francis and their 3 boys, Oliver, Julian, and Alexander.
