About Me

Abbe Don is a designer, storyteller, and healthcare innovator who believes in the power of design to transform healthcare. From 2013 to 2016 she was VP of Mobile UX and Strategic Design at athenahealth. From 2008 to 2013, she co-lead the Connected Health Domain at IDEO working with clients such as California Healthcare Foundation, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Novartis, and Samsung to improve healthcare. The early part of her career focused on consumer media and digital storytelling at a range of small and large companies including Apple Computer, Hewlett Packard, and The Walt Disney Company. Abbe has consistently applied a combination of personal storytelling, improvisation, and humor to her public talks, disclosing ways in which her own healthcare challenges have informed her approach to design for health care. Her talk “I’m not Big Boned, I’m Just Fat,” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYdzvSukEH0) provides laughs along with guidelines for designing programs for behavior change. Abbe holds a master’s degree in Interactive Telecommunications from The Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, a BFA from California Institute of the Arts and a BA from Pomona College. On a personal note, Abbe is Jewish, a kidney-cancer survivor and avid practitioner of Iyengar yoga. She lives in San Francisco with her wife Eve and their very large Koi fish, Hoover.
